Poppies!

North Las Vegas Bear Poppies

It’s spring in North Las Vegas, and that means the endangered bear poppy is in bloom. Thanks to the folks from the Protectors of Tule Springs Park who lead a group to visit the North Las Vegas site, I was able to snap a few pictures of the plant. You can get a closer look at all these pics by clicking on them.

What a stupid place for a freeway!

This scenic view looks north over a field of the poppies towards the North Las Vegas Wash, otherwise known as the Tule Springs Wash. In the background are the Sheep Mountains, the northernmost range in the Las Vegas Valley. It is also the proposed location for a highway and tract housing. Won’t that be lovely? The plot that the bear poppies are on, however, is protected. Directly behind me when I took the picture was Sun City Aliante.

North Las Vegas Mastadon Bones

Inside the Tule Springs wash there are numerous fossils of prehistoric mammals. Above are the remains of a mammoth. The area was the subject of a major archaeological study in the 1960′s. Remains of mammoths, camels, and American lions were found. Below is the shoulder bone of, I believe, an ancient camel.

To help preserve the area from reckless development, you all can sign a petition for federal protection of the Tule Springs Wash. Besides protecting the wash, signing might help discourage the urge to build apartments in the area. So, all you red shirts be sure to sign.

Thank you for taking the time to visit the site and post these pictures. I’ve been out there several times including bringing Senator John Lee to view the Mammoth Bones.
This area is a treasure that will be lost to future generations if we allow the city and developers to once again disect this area into high density projects as they are currently doing in many other area’s of North Las Vegas. Myself and our Alliance of HOAs and Concerned Citizens support the efforts of POTS and work closely with them in protecting this entire site.
    Thank You,
    Richard Cherchio
