County Commissioners Tom Collins, Chris Giunchigliani Don't Like Animal Ordinance

Clark County Commissioners Tom Collins and Chris Guinchigliani have sent letters to Nor’Town City Councilfolk protesting a proposed ordinance designed to regulate the sale of animals in public places. (KTVN)

According to the commissioners, the new ordinance will actually conflict with the city’s own spay and neuter laws. The laws require that animals be “fixed” by 12 weeks, yet the ordinance will allow the sale of animals as young as seven weeks.

The new ordinance would disallow the sale of animals in extremely hot or cold temperatures. But commissioner Guinchigliani says merchants will defy that provision easily.

I had a student member of the County Animal Advisory Committee confront a man at a swap meet because the puppies were in the direct sun. He pulled out his thermometer and moved it to the shade and told her, “See, I’m complying.” She told him he was not acting fairly and that the animals need to be shaded not the thermometer. He laughed at her and yelled at her. These types of games will go on under the proposed ordinance. (KTNV)

Guinchigliani also suggested that the requirement in the ordinance for sellers to obtain a breeder’s license would only legitimize “puppy mills” and encourage more backyard breeders.

Both Collins and Guinchigliani want Nor’Town City Council to consider a complete ban on the sale of animals at swap meets.

Council will be considering the ordinance at the regular meeting tonight down at City Hall at 6pm. Should be fun!

If I can get my act together, I’ll try to tweet the meeting on the old Twitter feed.

We need a ban on selling (any/all) animals at swap meets, flea markets, parking lots, etc… because we do not need one more outlet or incentive to sell animals. Lied is overflowing and killing animals that cannot be placed, the RJ sells animals, Craigslist sells animals, pet stores, breeders, and Petfinder.com has nearly 200,000 dogs available, to name a few. People, wake up and stand up and look deeper.
This ordinance was bought by Broadacres/Newport Diversified Inc to make money that is why. It not only has nothing to do with taking care of animals, it has exactly the opposite effect. Do not let them tell you how long and hard they worked on the language so they can regulate this horrific practice; we would legalize heroin if that were the case.
